How long is a piece of string?

When I was at primary school, we were taught to measure wiggly paths on maps by overlaying them with a piece of string and then measuring the string along a ruler… this is going to take an awfully long time tonight as I apply this principal to every Cathedral between Carlisle and Truro!… roughly 1,500 miles -if I were travelling along the motorways -but over the hills… double that? less? eek…
